In this video we will take a closer look at key indicators from section four of the RACGP Standards for general practice, 4th edition.

This section has 2 standards including: Practice systems, and Management of Health Information.

Remember some of indicators have a triangle, which means they are required. Those without a triangle, are recommended, but not essential in order to successfully gain an ‘accredited’ status.

The key criterion and indicators worth a special mention as part of this section include:

Criterion 4.1.1 Human resource system. The practice must have position descriptions for all staff describing their role in the practice. You must also demonstrate your induction system that orientates new GPs and other members of the practice team to your practice’s specific systems. Again the staff training sheets include a template for this.

You will need to identify the person or persons with primary responsibility for leading the practice’s quality improvement and risk management processes. You may also need to show evidence of regular practice discussions that encourage involvement and input from members of the practice team.

Criterion 4.1.2 Occupational health and safety. This requires that at least two members of the practice team are present during normal opening hours. A doctor should not be practicing without another staff member who can provide administrative support at the reception desk.

Criterion 4.2.2 Information security. Your practice team will need to demonstrate that personal health information of patients is not stored, or left visible, in areas where members of the public have unrestricted access or where constant staff supervision is not easily provided.

Your business continuity plan should include a designated person with primary responsibility for the practice’s electronic systems and computer security. You must also ensure that all electronic data transmission of patient health information from the practice is in a secure format.
